40 Days of Renewal: Living Victoriously with the Holy Spirit

Living Victoriously with the Holy Spirit

Being resolved and doubling our efforts to be morally good doesn’t empower us to live holy lives that are filledwith the good works of God.

1 O foolish Galatians! Who has bewitched you? It was before your eyes that Jesus Christ was publicly portrayedas crucified. 2 Let me ask you only this: Did you receive the Spirit by works of the law or by hearing with faith? 3 Are you so foolish? Having begun by the Spirit, are you now being perfected by the flesh?(Galatians 3:1-3 ESV)

My longings are to have:

  1. The mind of Christ (His love, word, purpose)
  2. A righteous life (Obedience to God’s commands with the right attitudes)
  3. An empowered life (Living submitted to the Holy Spirit and experiencing his power for transformationfor myself and others)

We are tempted to strive for these things in our strength, but it is impossible to do so.  We end up disappointed with the results, frustrated with the process and discouraged to continue trying.

God has given us the means to live as Christians well, to be empowered by his Spirit. Here are three biblical statements that help us understand how to live the empowered life: 1) Walk by the Spirit, 2) Live by the Spirit, and 3) Sow to the Spirit.

But I say, walk by the Spirit, and you will not gratify the desires of the flesh. (Galatians 5:16 ESV) A literal translation: “Walk by the Spirit, and you will in no way, not a chance, absolutely not fulfill the desires of the flesh.”

Rather than focusing on not gratifying the flesh, focus on walking in the Spirit. Resisting sinful desires and being victorious over them doesn’tcome in our willpower and determination; victory over sin and its desirescomes from the Holy Spirit.

What does it mean to walk by the Spirit? It means living day by day, moment by moment, and step by step in contact with and guidance of the Holy Spirit.

I __________________by the Spirit.

If we live by the Spirit, let us also keep in step with the Spirit.(Galatians 5:25 ESV)

Jesus and his Spirit are victorious in the war of sin, so we choose to live by the Spirit and line up and march in step with him as Commander.

I am the true vine….  Abide in meas the branch cannot bear fruit by itselfapart from meyou can do nothing.”(John 15:1-5)

Now to him who is able to do far more abundantly than all that we ask or think, according to the power at work within us.(Ephesians 3:20 ESV)

It is a relief to know that the power and sufficiency isin the Holy Spirit and not in us.

Each of us can come to rest in the accomplishments and power of Jesus Christ today, yielding to him and abiding in him by living in his Spirit.

I _________________in the Spirit and be in step with him.

8 For the one who sows to his ownflesh will from the flesh reap corruption, but the one who sows to the Spirit will from the Spirit reap eternal life.(Galatians 6:8 ESV)

We must understand the law established by God of sowing and reaping. If we sow to the flesh,we are going to reap sin of the fleshand its consequences. Instead, God instructs us to sow to the Spirit and reap eternal life.

The top ways to sow in the Spiritincludes:

  • Having daily and ongoing Bible readingand meditation (open the Bible app first)
  • Being in continual prayer
  • Living as an expression of worship to God
  • Connecting, growing and serving in the church

I _____________________to the Spirit with an expectation to reap by the Spirit.
