Choosing to be Renewed in Heart and Works

Revelation 2:4-5

Choosing to be Renewed in Heart and Works

Do you remember your early experiences with Christ? It is a wonderful time in the life of a Christian, a time when they experience ‘first love’ with him. People are vulnerable to fall away from their first love when they have plenty—plenty of resources, relationships and religion.  There is nothing wrong with those things, but when our plenty means that we are not dependent on God, then our love for him may wane.

4 But I have this against you, that you have abandoned the love you had at first. Remember therefore from where you have fallen; repent, and do the works you did at first….(Revelation 2:4-5a ESV)

40 Days of Renewal is intended to help you to grow in your love for the Lord or to help you to continue your love for him.

  • You’ll experience greater peace, joy and contentment
  • You’ll experience more significance (Romans 8:28)
  • You’ll experience and express more love

Remember… repent, and do the works you did at first…. (Revelation 2:4-5)

Remember– Think about your salvation experience and the ensuing days of love that followed.  Thinking about those days can help you to discover changes in your heart that may have occurred.

In marriage, Kay and I have discovered that if we do not purpose to love one another, then we won’t love one another; and if we don’t purpose to pursue one another, then we won’t capture one another’s hearts. Genuine love requires intentionality and purposefulness. The same is true in our love for the Lord.

Remember your first love for Jesus, and then consider if your love for him is stronger or weaker.

Repent– Repentance is changing the way we think, changing our intentions and changing our actions. Repentance says, “I will not let things remain as they are! I will not be indifferent toward God any longer.”

When we respond in repentance, God begins his work of renewal in us.

Do the works you did at first – Just as there is a love that you had at first with Christ, there are also works that you did at first. These works are the proper order of life. We gave Jesus the priorities of our living. We did these things because doing them deepened our relationship with God and gave us a greater understanding of him.

Does God want to use 40 Days to help you to get your priorities back in the right order and to do the work that you did at first?

15 Look carefully then how you walk, not as unwise but as wise, 16 making the best use of the time, because the days are evil.(Ephesians 5:15-16 ESV)

Starting today and during 40 Days, let’s give careful consideration to how we live our lives, and let’s be determined to make the best use of time.
