From Envy to Contentment

Proverbs 14:30

40 Days of Renewal:
From Envy to Contentment

A tranquil heart gives life to the flesh, but envy makes the bones rot. (Proverbs 14:30 ESV)

Lesson of King Saul (1 Samuel 9-18):

Letting envy linger in us and allowing it to grow in our hearts leads to spiritual, emotional, and physical destruction and death. Envious people tend to feel hostile, resentful, angry, and irritable, leading them to depression, anxiety, ingratitude, and personal unhappiness. Envy is like cancer in the soul, robbing us of joy, satisfaction, and contentment.

Jealousy is a reaction to the fear or threat of losing something or someone we possess.

Envy is a painful or resentful awareness of longing to have what someone else possesses.

Envy is being discontented with God and his provisions.

16 But I say, walk by the Spirit, and you will not gratify the desires of the flesh. 19 Now the works of the flesh are evident: sexual immorality, impurity, sensuality, 20 idolatry, sorcery, enmity, strife, jealousy, fits of anger, rivalries, dissensions, divisions, 21 envy, drunkenness, orgies, and things like these. I warn you, as I warned you before, that those who do such things will not inherit the kingdom of God. (Galatians 5:16, 19-21 ESV)

We have all felt jealousy and envy.  We’ve all felt that tinge of spite and resentment with the success of someone else. How are you vulnerable to envy?

14 But if you have bitter jealousy and selfish ambition in your hearts, do not boast and be false to the truth. 15 This is not the wisdom that comes down from above, but is earthly, unspiritual, demonic. 16 For where jealousy and selfish ambition exist, there will be disorder and every vile practice. (James 3:14-16 ESV)
