Victory Over Greed

40 Days of Renewal
Victory over Greed

The following verses direct the heart of every Christian.  30 And you shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength.’ 31 The second is this: ‘You shall love your neighbor as yourself.’ There is no other commandment greater than these.” (Mark 12:30-31 ESV)  But seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be added to you. (Matthew 6:33 ESV)

Evil’s strategic goal and initiative is to rob each of us of eternal life with God and his eternal rewards.

15 Do not love the world or the things in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him. 16 For all that is in the world—the desires of the flesh and the desires of the eyes and pride of life—is not from the Father but is from the world. 17 And the world is passing away along with its desires, but whoever does the will of God abides forever.(1 John 2:15-17 ESV)

There are greater glories and eternal rewards for people who despise the things that are present for love and service to God and his kingdom.

Greed is one of the evil’s strategic temptations to keep us from God and his eternal blessings.

Defining and Identifying Greed:

Greed is rooted in a misaligned heart and is expressed as a self-driven desire to have something (often money, possession, or power) so much that contentment is diminished or lost.

God has made all things for his glory; they are not glorious in and of themselves. Oh, the depth of the riches and wisdom and knowledge of God…!  For from him and through him and to him are all things. To him be glory forever. Amen.(Romans 11:33a; 36 ESV)

Jesus warned: “Beware! Guard against every kind of greed. Life is not measured by how much you own.” (Luke 12:15 NLT)  He went on to state that a person is a fool to store up earthly wealth but not have a rich relationship with God(12:21).

Greed comes with a high cost to our souls.

24 One gives freely, yet grows all the richer; another withholds what he should give, and only suffers want. 25 Whoever brings blessing will be enriched, and one who waters will himself be watered. 26 The people curse him who holds back grain, but a blessing is on the head of him who sells it. 27 Whoever diligently seeks good seeks favor, but evil comes to him who searches for it. 28 Whoever trusts in his riches will fall, but the righteous will flourish like a green leaf. (Proverbs 11:24-28 ESV)

  • Greed causes loss of ____________ with God and his sovereignty. It associates happiness as “God + something else.”
  • Greed is the path of folly that ends with ruin and destruction. (1 Timothy 6:9)
  • Greed blocks ____________ and hinders compassion.
  • Greed squelches love for God and others. (Matthew 6:24)
  • Greed robs us of ________ and promotes fearfulness and restlessness in us.

A stingy man hastens after wealth and does not know that poverty will come upon him. (Proverbs 28:22 ESV)

Greed destroys faith, which is why we must have victory over it.

Jesus gives us victory over greed.

Greed isn’t a money problem; it is a heart problem.  Greed is the expression of worship from a heart whose god is money, possession, and power.

“You believe and worship your way into greed, and you must believe and worship your way out of it.” (Jon Akin)

Want to be free from greed? Surrender to Jesus and be content in him.

Want to prosper in a greed-free life? Practice generosity.
