Victory over Lust

40 Days of Renewal:
Victory over Lust

Lust is a craving unhinged from Christ that we foster and feed, which rises up and contends against the allegiance of our hearts to God.

Matthew 5:27-30

  • God’s boundaries
  • Self-righteousness
  • Consequence of lust

Sexual sin begins with lust in our hearts and minds. In other words, lust doesn’t move us toward sin, lust is the sin. Lust defiles our hearts (Matthew 15:19). Jesus came to give us a new undefiled heart.

20 My son, be attentive to my words; incline your ear to my sayings. 21 Let them not escape from your sight; keep them within your heart. 22 For they are life to those who find them, and healing to all their flesh. 23 Keep your heart with all vigilance, for from it flow the springs of life. (Proverbs 4:20-23 ESV)

Our lives flow from our hearts. What our hearts meditate on will be acted upon. Lust is the mental training ground for destruction in our lives.

26 My son, give me your heart, and let your eyes observe my ways. 27 For a prostitute is a deep pit; an adulteress is a narrow well. 28 She lies in wait like a robber and increases the traitors (unfaithful) among mankind. (Proverbs 23:26-28 ESV)

  • Give me your heart.

  • Let your eyes observe my ways.

  • The Prostitute (a reference to lust and sexual sin in general) is a deep pit.

God’s warning: 1 John 3:4-10

Do you love the sin enough to go to hell for it?

Jesus frees us from lust and enables us to walk in freedom.

Be born again by the Holy Spirit.

Jesus answered… 6 That which is born of the flesh is flesh, and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit. 7 …You must be born again. (John 3:6; 7b ESV)

5 Put to death therefore what is earthly in you: sexual immorality, impurity, passion, evil desire, and covetousness, which is idolatry. 8 But now you must put them all away… 9 seeing that you have put off the old self with its practices 10 and have put on the new self, which is being renewed in knowledge after the image of its creator. (Colossians 3:5-10, selected ESV)

If then you have been raised with Christ, seek the things that are above, where Christ is, seated at the right hand of God.(Colossians 3:1 ESV)

“The kingdom of heaven is like treasure hidden in a field, which a man found and covered up. Then in his joy he goes and sells all that he has and buys that field. (Matthew 13:44 ESV)
